Becoming a children’s book author is an exciting, imagination-generating experience that makes students of all ages want to write and share aloud. It’s academic and engaging, and “disguised learning” at its best. Students will receive their own author kit and will be guided through narrative writing steps, such as character & plot development, to create their own imaginative masterpieces. Following the end of the course, each student will receive his or her unique published, professionally bound hardcover book with the author (the student) bio. We will have a publishing party for all students who finish a book.

We believe that in the 21st century, coding is a foundational skill, just like reading and writing. That’s why we say: Read, Write, Code. Students can start at any level and no previous experience is necessary. Each student will follow a personalized learning path with the assistance of a coach. They will learn basic concepts such as Sequence, Conditions, and Loops and will advance to more difficult program languages such as Java and Python. The curriculum is similar to playing a game, but students will master those critical concepts through the program and will be motivated to create more real-life projects.

The John Maxwell Team introduces YouthMAX, an innovative youth leadership curriculum crafted with care. Reading is a vital skill for children of all ages, and this amazing program gives kids the motivation to build their literacy skills. Young learners can practice alphabetics, reading fluency, and comprehension with guidance from an experienced coach – plus pick out a special ‘reading buddy’ stuffed animal pal who will be there every step of the way! And when they complete the course successfully? They’ll get to take home their furry companion as both reward AND reminder that learning should always be celebrated! Parents also receive helpful tips on how they can continue reinforcing these important habits at home too – what’s not to love?!

Navigating the news can be overwhelming, but in this class, middle schoolers can comfortably get to know the world around them better. They’ll choose any content from the New York Times (an article, essay, image, video, or podcast) on any topic and write why it intrigued them. Students learn to write for an audience as their pieces may be entered into the Times’ summer weekly contest and possibly published! Coaches will guide students through the winning rubric of writing a rich response to reading: making a personal connection; showing critical thinking; effectively handling evidence; and using a natural and engaging voice.
